Animals in Comics February Mini-Challenge
I’ve decided to host the mini-challenge for the month of February for the Graphic Novels challenge. Interesting story on how this came to be. So one of my best friends Pat, aka Deslisly, posted a picture of her cat, BooBoo, playing with a catnip mouse on her blog. And I fell in love with it because it totally looks like BooBoo is playing air guitar! I asked her if I could borrow the picture and she said yes….and an idea was born:
So yeah, that’s the button for the mini-challenge :p Feel free to use it, lol. The idea of the mini-challenge is to read a comic/graphic novel/webcomic during the month of February that features an animal! Trust me, there are more out there than you think! I lurve teh animalz and I know many of you do too, so I thought that this would be fun. Here are just a few, teeny weeny suggestions. There are MANY more! Feel free to leave your own suggestions in the comments for others to read!
Mouseguard
Laika
Fables
American Born Chinese
The Eternal Smile
The Sandman
Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species: A Graphic Adaptation
Neverwhere: A Graphic Adaptation
The Tale of One Bad Rat
Bone
The Tale of Despereaux: A Graphic Adaptation
Redwall: A Graphic Novel
See?? Plus there are so many more out there….whatever you choose to read, enjoy it!! If you want to participate and if you plan on participating, please leave me a note in the comments saying so! I’m not using Mr. Linky as it’s been a pain in my ass lately. So just sign up in the comments and if you do a sign up post on your blog, linking to that would be cool too! I’ll be drawing a prize for this mini-challenge as well
I’m a big fan of tshirts, and I really liked this tshirt :p
So yes, someone will get the “my cat dreams of spatulas” shirt in honor of participating in the Animals in Comics mini-challenge :p All you have to do to be eligible to win is sign up to participate!! Just leave a comment letting me know. No, you don’t have to be a participant in the Graphic Novels challenge to participate…though if you do read one graphic novel, you only have to read 2 more to win the challenge! And yes, you can read more than one animal graphic novel in February
I have no idea what I’m reading yet…I’d like to read Laika..haven’t read that one yet. Maybe some more Fables. I’d like to read the second Mouseguard book too! We’ll see! Ok….now go read about teh animalz!!

What a great idea. Add Pride of Baghdad by Brain K. Vaughn on your list! It’s a great graphic novel about lions that were loose from the Baghdad Zoo during a bombing. The book broke my heart. Vaughn is a talented writer.
Ooh this challenge could be just what I need to pick up the second Mouseguard book…
But, I’m on a book buying ban and need to be good during Feb…
But, that t-shirt is so cool…

Well you get the idea!
You NEED to read Laika, Chris! It’s so beautiful.
I’ll update the official blog tonight and link here
And let me e-mail you about something else too.
awww BooBoo is a star! lol lol
Definitely want to join this one. What a great challenge Chris. I love the cat picture too.
Hm, I have both Fables and Bone on my shelf, maybe I’ll read one of them. I will definitely be participating whatever I end up reading.
Ooooooh, love, love, love this mini-challenge!
Now, what to read. What to read. More Fables? Sounds good. Mouseguard? Sounds good. Redwall? Sounds good. All of the above? Sounds good. Can we pretend February starts today?
Excellent mini-challenge! I shall absolutely take part – hopefully I can get hold of that Charles Darwin book and read it for this, since I want to read it anyway.
Oh gee, what torture — I’ll likely be forced to read another Fables! I’m in! Great idea.
Oh, what a fun challenge! I have three animal graphic novels checked out right now – Babymouse: Queen of the World! (mouse), Warriors: The Lost Warrior (cats), and Korgi: Book 1 (dog). I’m most excited for Korgi by Christian Slade – it’s wordless and pencil drawn and just looks like a sweet and fun story.
so, would Maus count? or are you looking just for graphic novels that are actually about animals?
Cool! I just snuck in under the wire for the January mini-challenge, and I’m excited about this one, too. I’m certain I can run down a comic with an animal in it somewhere at my library if I don’t have one on my shelves already.
I’m in for this one. I’m going to try to read Laika, Mouse Guard 1 and maybe 2 and Pride of Baghdad.
I read Hope Larson’s Gray Horses (which contains a horse!), but I wasn’t wild about it:

I’m in! I just picked up Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 from the library yesterday! And I’ve been thinking of rereading Maus. Great idea Chris!
Great idea. I am bummed that I already read Pride of Baghdad last month and I read Maus years ago. So, for this mini-challenge I read the Rabbi’s Cat, which I didn’t like nearly as much.

I’m in with Fables v. 12 and Jack of Fables v. 1 already read, and I mean to read Mouse Guard and Laika also this month.
So…instead of reading one GN for this, I ended up reading three that would all qualify – Bayou, The Metamorphosis, and Bone. All on the same review, too! http://zenleaf.blogspot.com/2010/02/3-graphic-novel-reviews.html
Yay me! I read two! Here’s my review of Gunnerkrigg Court:
